When you are put in the position to lead others, you have already gained the trust of someone. It is time to gain the trust and respect of your team now, as well. It is also important to learn some leadership techniques. Use the information below to help improve your skills as a leader.

#1 Watch out for project creep

This can happen when your project's scope isn't clearly defined. If you have control over the project, resist the temptation to add more project objectives as time goes on. If you are receiving external pressure to expand your project, resist it with all your might. Your subordinates will thank you.

#2 Respect other opinions

You can never be a good leader if you don't respect that others may have different opinions than your own. While it may seem like being a leader is all about bossing people around, you can never be the boss if you have no idea how to respect the feelings of others.

#3 Mistakes are part of the process

If you make a mistake, admit it. Nothing will kill the confidence workers have for you faster than insistence that you're right when you are clearly not. However, if you can admit that you are wrong, you will gain the respect of your underlings. The respect of those around you is imperative.

#4 Express a vision for the company

Great leaders differentiate themselves from great managers because of their vision. They see where the company needs to be 5 years, 10 years, and 20 years down the road. If you've got the vision, share it with your employees. Make them part of the team that'll help get you there.

#5 Be part of the group (Be present)

Be sure that you spend some time each day out of your office, and in the midst of the workforce. Try to be a part of the group, while maintaining your leadership role. You can use this time to get to know your employees, ask questions or even join them for lunch.

#6 Create a healthy workspace

Treat all of your employees well and never get involved in office gossip. Employees are usually happier in an environment where their work is appreciated and valued on the same level as any other employee. Spend time working with all of your employees so that you understand each person's contribution.

#7 Contents, games, etc. are great challenges

Consider holding monthly contests among your employees. These contests can be based on the most sales, the best customer service or a variety of things. The prizes for the contests can be something as simple as a preferred parking place or as extravagant as an additional paid day off.

#8 Do not just observe, be involved

Being a great leader is not all about paying too much attention to every move that people make. It is about showing people the best way to do things and allowing them to show you that they are capable. You have to provide encouragement and reinforcements to help them do their best.

#9 Stay in touch with your emotions

In order to be an effective leader, you need to stay in touch with your emotions. Do not allow yourself to make any of your positive traits turn negative. For example, if you are normally a very confident leader, do not allow added pressure to turn you into someone that is overly arrogant.

#10 Always expect the worst and be prepared

Be prepared for conflict and try to deal with it before it gets out of hand. Ignoring conflict will make the problem worse and make you look too weak to handle it. Practicing good communication skills with your employees will help them feel more respected even if they don't agree with specific decisions.

If you are in a leadership position, there is a lot relying on your success as an effective leader. It is time to step up and try to be the best leader possible. Take the information above to heart. It may mean the difference between you being a mediocre leader or a great one.
