Most of our earliest memories bring with them a euphoric feeling, one that makes us wish we could relive those moments. Sitting around a fire just after a meal or in bed after being tucked in, the setting might be different for each one of us but the nearly palpable feeling is the same. What ties all these individually unique memories together is that there was always a story. With our little minds dreaming with imaginative power the idea of creating a world into being from a narration was always appealing.
More than allowing us to embrace the power of imagination these stories in essence became part of the foundation of how we perceived the world. Some of our moral standards and beliefs without us even realizing were derived from these tales and narrations. I have seen how kids pass through a phase where they assume a character they like from the stories they hear and they imitate whatever it is they have observed from the story like costumes or how the character acts. It might be a phase but we never really grow out of it, we just grow up to take up more characters from the stories around us to influence different areas of our lives. This is a representation of how much power lies in a story.
Stories do not just end with tales and legends for entertainment nor do they just end around campfires and when we were being told bedtime stories. Stories are our daily lives, written as every second passes with strokes of actions. When you are storytelling, the story awards you with the power to create and project it in a way you would want it perceived. Just as there are many legends and fairy tales which we have seen being told from a million angles and plots and every other time we imagine it and believe it as it is being told. Once you start telling it, it becomes yours to create whichever way you want.
We are the authors of our stories, each one of us daily writing and telling a story to those around who care to observe and listen. The next generation is in our shadows observing the stories we are telling with our lives. They are listening to our narrations and learning from our perception of the world. As much as the world is evolving there is a lot that was carried forward from the generation before us. The stories they told before us, they stayed with us and mapped our beliefs, our morals to make us who we are today. The story you tell matters, a whole new generation depends on it.
Our stories should spark curiosity, a hunger to learn and a wild imagination to dream in the minds of the next generation. Our history should be one that inspires more in them. Stories are not just told by individuals, as societies and communities we are ever telling our stories as well. We can tell stories that foster oneness, peace, hope, and all the good things. Whatever is happening today it will be history told in a few years and it is up to each one of us to make that history one that influences the next generation in the most positive ways.
Every story carries with it a transformative power that allows us to see the world differently. You can see this in the books we read and the films we watch. A good book can give you a whole new picture of how you ought to see life. They allow us to encounter the world from another point of view and eventually become a building block of a personalized perception. They are an entry point of ideas and change.
As we share each other's experiences, sharing our experiences with the generation to come a connection is fostered. We allow the next generation to learn from our experiences and mistakes. The lessons engulfed in our stories can shape, strengthen, or challenge their opinions, values, and moral standards. By telling our stories we give the listener the power to walk in our shoes, get a glimpse of the world we have created and at times even bring inspiration.
Telling the right story in the right way which engages the audience of the young people can help get through the mind chatter and clutter of numerous thoughts and noise in our world. We can put across a message of hope, life, and abundance today and have it manifest in reality tomorrow. Sharing your story means sharing life lessons, giving those following behind you warning signs, and eagerness of what to look forward to. Imagine a generation that informed and impacted navigating life packed with the right tools. Everyone has a story to share, a life-changing one, character building, and goal shaping story, you just have to be willing to share it.
‘’Our stories help define who we are and what we stand for. They set us apart in a noisy and competitive world. And they help ensure we are remembered.’’
